Going underground 136/366 Picture a Day 2012

Underground Art

I very rarely go on the tube these days but today was one of those days I did.  It made me realise how much information I’m not privy to any more about what is going on in London – how many films I’m no longer aware of or plays that I really should go to see (but invariably don’t) and feeling the hustle of London life.  I do much prefer walking or buses but getting that feeling of being in the heart of the city is a good feeling too (if only on occasions).  Having not travelled by tube for a while I hadn’t ever spotted Michael Landy’s Acts of Kindness on before.  He produced a series of art works that are exhibited on the central line in stations and on the trains which I think are rather touching.  Particularly this shot where they’ve gone as far as producing it on fabric and integrated it into the seats.  Brightened up what might have been a rather uninspiring tube journey.

Scooter Maintenance 135/366 Picture a Day 2012

Cleaning

While I don’t believe in setting the kids to clean (much) at their age  I am never one to turn down an actual offer of it.  Jonah is not renowned for his love of tidying up let alone cleaning so I was rather surprised at his eagerness to clean his “very dirty scooter”.  This is one of those jobs I might *think* I should do but in reality, a very dirty scooter hurts no-one and in my view gets super dirty again way too quickly to bother with cleaning it in the first place.  However, not wishing to discourage any signs of willingly wanting to clean scrubbing the scooter on our balcony we did.

Printing British Museum Style 134/366 Picture a Day 2012

Inspired by the Chinese Gallery

When I was at school I think we possibly went on one school trip a year – and even then I actually can’t quite remember where that would be to.  Ava heads out at least three times a term to some museum, gallery or exhibit – another reason to love London.  This weeks trip was to the amazing British Museum, focussing on printing and the design process needed to get there.  As a ‘learned it all myself’ designer I also enjoyed finding out what you are actually supposed to do as a by product of helping on the trip too!  Follow the magic five step process of Technique, Inspiration, Design, Printing and Presentation and voila – your picture is born.  The children spent a little while collecting ideas from the artefacts in the Chinese Gallery – focussing on shape, form and the detail on some of the objects.  Ava eventually chose a butterfly as her final image, drew it, carved into a polystyrene printing block, painted over it and finally printed the finished piece onto paper.  and, wowser, the finished print works looked brilliant

*note to self – kids Christmas card production line now sorted*

R.I.P Yellow Jeans 133/366 Picture a day 2012

"I loved you yellow jeans"

A sad day for us in the Scampette household.  Jonah’s most favourite item of clothing (he ADORES yellow) have just given up the ghost and got a rather big hole in the knee/are pretty much destroyed.  see you later lovely jeans but thankfully, any day soon, we can say hello to your next size up version bought in anticipation of this day arriving.

Sports Day 132/366 Picture a Day 2012

three legs better than two?

Races in the park anyone?  School no longer seems to do sports days so the first lovely day for forever prompted a party in the park and some good, old fashioned racing.  Three legged, wheel barrow, sack race and tug of war but no appearance of my favourite … the egg and spoon!

Facetime 131/366 Picture a Day 2012

Hello iPad

Seeing people in the flesh is clearly the best way possible to spend time with friends and family … facetiming them is the next best ‘virtual’ thing.  Hello Maeve – thanks for your clapping and waving
